Description :
AFYREN is a company specializing in microbiology and bioprocess engineering for the recovery of non-food biomass. Founded in 2012 and managed by Nicolas Sordet and Jérémy Pessiot, AFYREN brings together 23 employees at its sites in Lyon and Clermont-Ferrand.
AFYREN offers innovative solutions to manufacture the ingredients of tomorrow by replacing petroleum-based products with products derived from natural micro-organisms, in a circular economy approach: a family of 7 fully biobased organic acids (carboxylic acids from 2 to 6 carbons). Generated by fermentation, they are of high quality and can reach purities greater than 99%. This wide range of organic acids allows AFYREN to reach global and diversified markets.
These biomolecules are interesting alternatives for industrials looking for sustainable ingredients with antibacterial, olfactory and conservation-type performance. These are innovative and efficient solutions for the cosmetics, aromas and perfumes, human and animal nutrition and fine chemicals sectors.
This production is carried out thanks to its innovative environment friendly and zero waste technology AFYNERIE®. The technology is patented worldwide through 9 patent families and is the result of more than 10 years of R&D. AFYNERIE® is an all-in-one non-GMO fermentation technology that can be applied worldwide. It makes it possible to develop different types of biomass that do not compete with food chains (for example by-products from the sugar industry) while tending towards zero waste.
AFYNERIE® enables the manufacture on an industrial scale, from secondary natural resources, of some of the first natural organic acids, 100% biobased, GMO-free. Made from renewable carbon, the carbon footprint of these products is reduced by two-thirds compared to their petroleum-based equivalent.
AFYREN NEOXY, the first AFYREN factory will be located in Carling, in the Grand Est (construction start in the second half of 2020). It is dedicated to the production of its 7 natural organic acids. AFYREN thus offers its customers a european offer ("Made in France" production), in the face of currently very asian and oligopolistic production.
AFYREN was supported in its development by the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes and Grand Est Regions, Bpifrance, and the European Investment Bank. AFYREN was selected in FT120 (the 120 most promising start-ups in French Tech) in January 2020 and received the “Efficient Solution” label from the Solar Impulse foundation in November 2019
