Epichlorohydrin (via EPICEROL process)

Solvay

Description :
80% of epichlorhydrin is used in epoxy resins ( coating, paints, adhesives, composite polymers)
20 % are used to produce floculating agents, wet paper strength reinforcement, non-flammable polymers

Product family :
Intermediate products > Chemical intermediates

Sectors/Markets :

Bio-based content
Natural glycerin by product of oleochemistry or biodiesel production (sourcing rapeseed, sunflower, soybean, palm...)
62%

Environmental gain
Valorisation of a by-product generated by biodiesel production .
The new process has renewable glycerine as a raw material instead of propylene ( a fossil derivative) (principle #7 of green chemistry). Therefore it contributes to the saving of fossil ressources .
Furthermore the process reduces the consumption of molecules (principle #2 of green chemistry) and the production of by-products and wastes is dramatically reduced (principle #1 of green chemistry).
More precisely, the new process allows a division by 8 of chlorinated by-products, by 10 of the water consumption and by 2 of chlorine. CO2 emissions are cut by 20 % et non renewable ressources consumption is reduced by 50%.
